Chapter 4
The next day, rain is pouring down by the bucketful. What started out as steady but manageable rain, escalated the last hour to what feels like a minor storm. Howling winds throw huge drops toward my truck from every direction, the noise it creates reminding me of a jackhammer. The final leaves clinging to the tree branches are ripped off, bushes are in danger of being torn up by the root and whirled away. Thereâs not a single bird in sight. Itâs apocalyptic-level weather and any sane person wouldnât think to set foot outside until it abates.
But David doesnât answer his phone when I call to cancel and make sure heâs safe and sound. Since heâs not the kind of man to shirk his responsibilities, especially to his elderly neighbor, I have a hunch and decide to drive past the park before going home.
My hunch was right; I spot his car in the lot. I park next to it, and as the engine ticks and cools down, I crane my neck and try to look out the windshields between the huge splats of rain.
I shudder. I donât look forward to setting foot outside, but I need to make sure heâs fine. Groaning, I pull the hood of my sturdy anorak over my head. I turn to look at the umbrella, but after a brief consideration, I leave it; itâll be turned inside-out immediately anyway. After a deep breath and with tense muscles, I wrestle open the door and get out of the truck.
The wind grabs the door and slams it shut behind me, and I jump out of the way to avoid getting my fingers trapped. Raindrops slam on my head, my shoulders, splash against my face and get into my eyes, even my nose. The winds are tearing at my anorak, trying to rip it apart at the seams.
Grabbing my hood so it wonât blow off, I start jogging. I hold up my free hand in front of my face, trying to shield it from the icy splashes of rain. When I get underneath the trees, they bear the brunt of the storm, and Iâm able to increase my speed.
Iâm determined to find David and Princess and get them out of the elements. My steps are fueled with a burning need to protect them both, and I let the instinct propel me forward. Iâll question the need later, in the warm and dry comfort of my own home.
I donât have to run far before I see them. Theyâre both decked out in rain gear, but while Davidâs jacket was probably good enough for the earlier weather, now, itâs sadly inadequate. It flaps around him as heâs pressing the little dog close to his chest, struggling with the umbrella that turns itself inside-out in front of my eyes. Davidâs lips are moving, but the wind snatches the words away from his mouth and I canât hear what he says.
When he looks up from the dog and catches a glimpse of me, his shoulders sag and he increases his speed.
